Building a Sauna From a Pre-Cut Kit

Building a sauna from scratch is an easy project for the medium skilled do-it-yourselfer. Pre-cut kits and detailed sauna building plans make it possible to build your own Finnish style steam room in the backyard or a suitable indoor location such as the bathroom, bedroom, basement or garage. With proper planning, a builder can fit a Finnish sauna into just about any spare room desired.

There is some planning to do before actually building the sauna from the kit. The area needs to be prepared properly. Start by framing the area using 2 x 4 studs for the walls and ceiling joists. Install the wiring and plumbing according to the building plans (should be done by a professional), attach the outside paneling and insulate walls and ceiling. Kits usually include items such as tongue-and-groove kiln-dried cedar boards for the inside walls and ceiling, pre-assembled benches and their supports, wooden floor slats, the door and its frame, the vapor barrier and all necessary hardware and drawing plans to complete the installation. As a builder, you can choose from electric, infrared, natural gas, propane or wood fired sauna room heaters.

Typical sauna kits can be installed in a 4’ x 4’ to 6’ x 8’ area. Plan on spending between $3000 - $4500 for the kit itself and the heater. Building the frame and the expense of paying the electrician depends on how much of this work you can do yourself. The sauna kits available online from 123saunas.com can also be built outside on a concrete slab with the addition of a suitable roof. Plan on spending 2 – 3 days building one of these home saunas from scratch. Simple tools such as a hammer, handsaw, electric drill, miter box, screwdriver, tape measure and carpenter’s square is all that is needed to build one of these home saunas. You don’t have to have special knowledge on how to build a sauna with one of these pre-cut kits and building plans.
