Enjoying Modern Sauna Styles Based On Finnish Home Saunas
Finland is known as the country of origin of the sauna.
The original Finnish home saunas were used by Finns for both religious and
relaxation purposes. After World War II, it seemed people had little time for
relaxation, but when they did they would seek the soothing heat of a sauna room.
There were experiments in sauna room heaters and styles conducted by
architects and physicians and eventually Finnish saunas were marketed all
over the world for medicinal and relaxation purposes.
As many product ideas that are “borrowed” from other cultures, the style of
sauna room used by the people of Finland was modified. In Finland, home saunas were
used not only as a heat source for warming the body, but also for cleansing the
body. The wash room, as it was referred by the Finns, was a large building that
was built outside the home. The Finnish style was more rustic than the modern
styles.
The Finns have always had a close association with nature and it was only
natural for sauna rooms in the early days to fit that natural style. In addition
to the construction, the type of heater used in original saunas was exchanged
for different heat sources. The heat was originally generated using smoke. There
was an oversized oven where wood was burned to generate heat. These home saunas were
equipped with a chimney to release the smoke that accumulated. Nowadays, sauna
heaters use wood, gas, and infrared light (radiation).
If you want to add a sauna that resembles those used by the Finns but with
modern conveniences in one of the rooms in your home, it’s easier than you
think. You can pay for someone to custom-build a steam room or purchase a kit
that includes a steam room heater of your choice. You can specify a Finnish sauna
and then add a heater and accessories. Depending on style and size,
home saunas
can cost anywhere from $1000 to $8000.
