Finding the Right Heater to Recreate the Finnish Sauna Experience

The Finnish Sauna is a Scandinavian tradition that has been enjoyed in that part of the world for centuries. Now Finnish wisdom is spreading to the rest of the world, as other cultures begin to appreciate all the advantages that a Finnish home sauna has to offer, from the physical benefits of improved circulation and metabolism to the more subtle psychological and social attributes. The traditional sauna used by the Finns typically builds heat through the use of a wood fired room heater, but for reasons of safety and convenience, this is often not the first choice for American sauna users. There are a number of different options in sauna room heaters to choose from.

A sauna is only as good as the heater and there are several things to consider when selecting a stove for your steam room. A variety of room heaters are available in differing price ranges, so you might first want to define your budget. To recreate an authentic Finnish home sauna the stove should provide a large surface area to heat up the rocks. The heat thus created would be considered dry. By ladling water on top of the hot rocks, steam is created, turning a dry sauna into a steam room.

A typical stove that falls into the above category is the Thermasol traditional sauna heater sold by Homecenter. The electric room heater recreates the traditional Finnish home sauna experience without having to burn wood. The triple construction electric stove requires a dedicated 240V/25 Amp circuit and draws 6000 Watts. Corrosion resistant stainless steel elements assure a long heater life. The authentic Finnish steam sauna experience is recreated by ladling water onto the Olivine rocks imported from Finland. With a weight of only 100 lbs. and its no-hassle electric heating elements, this electric stove will turn any properly prepared room into a home sauna.

Other options include natural gas stoves, infrared sauna heaters and wood burning stoves. Base your decision on what source of energy is readily available versus energy costs at your location. Finnish home saunas come as pre-built sauna rooms or as a sauna kit. A heater may or may not be included with the package.
