What Type of Sauna Rocks are the Best ?

When choosing sauna rocks to use with your wood burning sauna stove, you just can’t choose any rocks. You have to look for rocks that have a high chemical and weathering resistance and ones that can withstand high temperatures. If you want to pick up rocks on the beach or around your home, you have to make sure that they do not contain any harmful materials, such as sulphur. Although they are not serious to your health when used in a sauna, they won’t last long and have to be replaced quite often.

Using a stove that burns wood is a very cost effective choice for your sauna when you have access to large amounts of wood. Igneous rocks are the best ones recommended for placing on top of sauna room heaters and preferably they should be dark in color. This is because they can hold the heat better. The heat produced by burning wood is often quite high. You do not need to have large rocks and the largest ones for use in saunas should not be any bigger than the size of your fist.

You just can’t take a wood burning stove that you used in a garage and use it in your sauna. When you do not have a proper stove, most of the heat would go out and not heat up the rocks or the sauna sufficiently for you to have a very good bathing experience. You really do need to get one of the proper stoves specifically manufactured for saunas so that you do not endanger yourself by causing a fire.

Before you put the rocks on top of the wood burning stove, make sure you rinse off any dust and clean the ashes out of the stove before you start putting in the wood for a new bathing session. Arrange the rocks loosely so that the air can circulate and will steam when you pour water over them to get the best advantages from your Finnish sauna.
