Enjoying a Swedish Sauna The Traditional Way

To properly enjoy a true Swedish sauna, you have to remove all of your clothing. Swedish steam bath saunas are built from pine, birch or cedar wood with interior temperatures of about 100ºC. There is a certain etiquette that Swedes follow when bathing in a sauna. The first thing they do is to shower before they enter the sauna.

When you first enter a Swedish home sauna, you sit back and relax in the heat letting it permeate into your skin. After a while you can create steam by pouring water over the hot stones. While it is advisable to spend about a half hour in the sauna, many Swedes alternate between showers to help them cool down and re-entering the steam bath for more therapeutic benefits. If you really want to take full advantage of a Swedish steam bath, jump in an icy cold river after you are finished.

Although the typical Swedish style sauna doesn’t have as much steam as the Finnish models, you do have to make sure there is some moisture. Often Swedish home saunas are called dry saunas, so you need to create steam occasionally to make it easier for you to breathe. You should also wet the bench and cover it with a towel before you sit or lie down for your bathing session because the high temperature will make the seat extremely hot.

With saunas from such manufacturers as Mr. Sauna, you can enjoy the benefits of a Swedish steam bath in your own home. You can build a sauna in your backyard or add one in the corner of a bathroom. Sit back and let the heat and steam surround you to relieve your muscles after work. Your skin and bodily functions will thank you because the heat and steam are very therapeutic for releasing harmful toxins.
